{"id":608,"date":"2018-10-31T15:13:57","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T15:13:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dunbarchoral.org.uk\/dc\/?p=608"},"modified":"2018-10-31T15:13:57","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T15:13:57","slug":"thoughts-on-the-words-of-two-christmas-songs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dunbarchoral.org.uk\/dc\/2018\/10\/31\/thoughts-on-the-words-of-two-christmas-songs\/","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on the words of two Christmas songs &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;He sing zuhl luv song a-zweego oo uhl l0ng oo-aw-kin nin nuh oo-in-tuhr oo-un-duhr-land&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Puzzled ?<\/p>\n<p>We were &#8230;&#8230;. but not for long,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Winter wonderland&#8221; &#8211; a fantastic arrangement by Leo Arnaud.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How about the traditional words for &#8220;Cherry Tree Carol&#8221; :<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>O then bespoke Mary, so meek and so mild,<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<dl>\n<dd>\u2018Pluck me one cherry, Joseph, for I am with child.\u2019<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>O then bespoke Joseph with words so unkind,<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\u2018Let him pluck thee a cherry that brought thee with child.\u2019<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>O then bespoke the babe within his mother\u2019s womb,<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>\u2018Bow down then the tallest tree for my mother to have some.\u2019<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Then bow\u2019d down the highest tree unto his mother\u2019s hand:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>when she cried, \u2018See, Joseph, I have cherries at command!\u2019<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>O then bespake Joseph\u2014 \u2018I have done Mary wrong;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>but cheer up, my dearest, and be not cast down.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>\u2018O eat your cherries, Mary, o eat your cherries now;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>o eat your cherries, Mary, that grow upon the bough.\u2019<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Then Mary pluck\u2019d a cherry as red as the blood;<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>then Mary went home with her heavy load<\/dd>\n<dd><\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>The words in the arrangement by David Willcocks have lost a little of this naivety but the carol is still wonderful, nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;He sing zuhl luv song a-zweego oo uhl l0ng oo-aw-kin nin nuh oo-in-tuhr oo-un-duhr-land&#8221; Puzzled ?
